March Garden

It has been a bit chilly this last two weeks following a beautiful spring weather. Many people’s thoughts turn towards their gardens. This year I see a lot of new gardeners as the world continues to increase in uncertainties. It is essential to our health to know where our food is coming from and know how our food is grown.

As I discussed in the previous post, It is time to start planning if you already have not begun and plant the early spring crops. Hopefully, you have created your garden journal and planned out how each of the beds can be produced in succession for the most crops. A simple spiral notebook to a fancy bought journal will work. In this journal, you will want to draw diagrams of your beds and plan out the first plantings. It can not be artistic, but even a rough pencil drawing would be fine. At the bottom of each bed page, I like to list the plants, the dates planted, and the dates for harvest. When I do the successive planting, I can plan when to plant it. I either tape/glue the seed package or picture from a seed catalog (with the information for growing) in the pages following so I can review for next year.   I will continue to talk about this journal in the days to come.

One of the resources I would like to share is the 2022 Planting Calendar: When to Start Vegetable Seeds | The Old Farmer’s Almanac site. When you enter your zip code, it gives you the last frost date and a handy calendar for planting vegetables for your area. This gives you a way to keep records for your garden, which is accurate for your site. Then in combination with your notes from year to year, you can accurately predict, plan, and realize the best plants for your garden.
